Fresh off fourth quarter releases of respective solo albums, rapper, singer, and sogwriter Illa J and rising neo-soul sensation David Morin converge on Webster Hall's The Studio for a night of electrifying hip hop and soul fused with jazz.
The talented younger brother of legendary hip hop producer J Dilla and former Slum Village member, Illa J, returns to NYC after tearing the house down at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn for his album release show and touring Europe late last year. His self-titled Bastard Jazz debut is out now.
Lauded by critics as "the next big thing in music," multi instrumentalist and soulful singer David Morin kicks off 2016 having opened for Hiatus Kaiyote in his hometown of Vancouver and will be making his live NYC debut with his live band on the 20th in support of his debut solo album Every Colour (out now via Bombay Records). Morin's feel good fusion of soul, hip hop, and jazz are majestic, his riffs and vibes reminiscent of contemporary luminaries Musiq Soulchild and D'Angelo.
The show at Webster Hall will also include a mind-blowing set by west coast beat-making extraordinaire Jansport J (of Delicious Vinyl). With production credits ranging from Snoop Dogg, Ab-Soul, Kool G Rap, and AZ, to World's Fair, Blu, and Freddie Gibbs, Jansport is sure to rock the house. The night will also feature DJ sets from Aaron DRM, Erik The Red, and Nav, providing just the right mix for vehement hip hop purists and golden age r&b/soul heads.
